Have you been to see your doctor lately?
I have. And I feel it is important for people to have regular visits with their physicians such as yearly physicals and other appointments as needed. There are many health concerns that a doctor can help you with. But I want to share with you some common misconceptions about physicians. Sometimes there are other practitioners better suited to your needs depending upon what your health concerns happen to be. Here are my top 3 things that your doctor will NEVER reveal to you.
#3 Your doctor doesn't have enough time for you
Unfortunately, most physicians are actually being overworked and underpaid. Insurance companies are paying less and less for patient visits and services and it's becoming more difficult for doctors' offices to bill these companies for their services. Additional staff is required for medical billing and coding and advancements in technology and equipment make the cost of doing business quite high. Therefore, physicians need to take on more patients in an effort to bring in more revenue. And they have the same amount of time as the rest of us. So it is becoming more and more common for most doctors to have brief appointments to be able to keep up with the costs. More patients, less time. This can't be good for anyone's health in the long run. In my opinion, this is an unsustainable system.
#2 Your doctor has practically no training in nutrition
It's true! While doctors are highly trained they are also specifically trained. And nearly 75% of all U.S. medical schools offer NO courses in nutrition. Not even one course. So it is entirely possible that your physician went through medical school with zero training in nutrition and how it can benefit your health. Actually, it's very probable. It's just not how physicians are being trained in our modern society. Unless your doctor has sought additional training regarding nutrition, like a Functional Medicine practitioner, they do not have the background needed to provide the most beneficial nutritional advice to improve your health.
#1 Your doctor doesn't have a plan to help you reclaim your health and come off of medication
This is the saddest one of all for me to share with you. This is exactly what happened to me about 8 years ago when I was first diagnosed with a bunch of health issues. I was put on medication and that was that. No expectation or guidance to come off of the meds. I literally asked my gastroenterologist how to get my health back so I could stop needing the medication and his exact response was that he didn't know. And that was totally unacceptable to me. Which is why I eventually went back to school to study nutrition and Functional Medicine. I am able to help people who are in the situation that I was all those years ago. And I know it's exactly where I should be. There is real value in using the tools of nutrition and lifestyle changes to improve health, reverse symptoms, and minimize medication. This is truly the future of health care.
Now please don't misinterpret what I am saying. I am in no way implying that doctors are unnecessary. Quite the contrary. If you need a surgery, then you need a surgeon. But where our current healthcare system is greatly lacking is in reversing chronic disease. And it's because these symptoms are driven by food and lifestyle choices. So there's an emerging field that can fill in the gap to help people make necessary nutrition and lifestyle changes to reverse disease. The current system is broken when it comes to wellness. It is truly a sick care system. But it doesn't have to be...
More than anything, I want to empower you with the knowledge that there are practitioners out there who do have time to understand your entire health background, who are extensively trained in nutrition, and who do have a plan to help you regain health and vitality. But these practitioners are most likely not your physician. Who are they then? Health coaches. Practitioners, like me, who take the time to go over your health background and help you link the pieces together as well as formulate a plan or strategy to help you regain your health through nutrition and lifestyle changes. So I hope now you are able to discern more specifically which type of practitioner you need to seek depending upon your needs.
